What is happening?

The Curtin Information Security team has discovered that some staff and student personal devices have Virtual Private Networking (VPN) software installed called Hola. This software is being used to unknowingly send spam from personal devices. Hola can be used, like many VPN software packages, to unblock websites and watch content overseas that is not otherwise available in the country you are currently in (e.g. Netflix). Unfortunately, the Hola software was not built with security in mind and allows anyone connected to the Hola software to potentially exploit their device, including cyber criminals.

How will this affect you?

You can check to see if Hola is installed in your operating system or browser, by following these steps:

If CITS determines malicious or inappropriate activity is occurring from your device, you may find your device being disconnected from the Curtin network, especially from the Hola VPN software.

CITS Recommendations

CITS recommends all Curtin staff and students who have installed this VPN service, uninstall the software immediately. This will ensure you remain connected securely to the Curtin network. Below are the steps for uninstalling Hola from your device:

If you are in need of non-work related VPN software, we recommend reviewing some options proposed in the following article Ten best VPN services 2019.
