New office recycling system – new rollout areas

red and yellow recycling bins

To improve recycling at Curtin, we will be introducing new recycling and general waste bins to all buildings at our Bentley Campus. Bins will be placed in central areas, such as kitchens, and all under desk bins will be removed.

This initiative is a simple, yet powerful change that supports the University’s commitment to sustainability.

Roll out schedule

The second phase of the rollout of new bins will be on 25 May 2019 and will include the following buildings:

P01 P05 601 602 603 605 609 610 611 614 616 and 619.

Why remove under-desk bins?

By removing under-desk bins, we can:

  • Reduce waste to landfill
  • Improve recycling by separation at the source, and
  • Save on resources such as labour and materials (e.g. cleaning, bins and bin liners)

The importance of separating waste at the source

It has been shown that separating waste at the source is the most efficient way to reduce waste and to increase recycling. Staff and students in office space will need to take their waste to the central bins. Food waste (such as tea bags, coffee grounds, fruit and vegetable peels, bread, meat and rice) may be collected separately in the future.

Staff and students in office spaces can continue to empty paper into the large blue paper recycling bins located in central printer/photocopier areas. Cleaners will empty all central bins on a daily basis.
